Malaria Kills 10 in Eastern Indonesian Island

DATELINE: July 29, 1999 04:17 GMT - Jakarta

Malaria has killed 10 people in the eastern part of Lombok island, just east of the Indonesian resort island of Bali, a report said Thursday.

A staff member at a health polyclinic in Sukaraja, some 70 kilometres (43.4 miles) east of Mataram, the main town on Lombok, said 10 people have died of malaria while 97 others have been found infected since the disease was first detected there in early July, the Media Indonesia daily said.

The victims were mostly infants and the elderly, the official said.

Local health authorities have since conducted operations to prevent the malaria spreading, by distributing quinine pills and fumigating whole areas.
