Malaria Cases Increasing in Nicaragua
DATELINE: 12 December 1999
AUGUST 6, 1999, FRIDAY
DATELINE: Managua, august 6; ITEM NO: 0806031
Nicaraguan medical authorities registered 17,552 cases of malaria in the first
half of the year, up 20 percent from the same period of last year, an official
of the health ministry said friday. director of the ministry's epidemic program
Juan Bermudez blamed the rise on the rainy season, which is favorable for the
breeding of mosquitoes --principal carriers of malaria. the ministry has
launched an anti-malaria campaign, sending medical groups and mosquito nets to
remote rural areas, he said. during the same period, cases of dengue fever in
Nicaragua reduced dramatically to 3,478, from 5,480 in the first half of 1998,
Bermudez noted.
