Contact: Joy Borra

Joy Borra, a retired Bellsouth public relations manager, became involved in malaria prevention in Africa through a chance encounter with President Jimmy Carter in 2005, and inspired her do something special for her 60th birthday. Joy enrolled her entire congregation, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta -UUCA- raised about US17,000 and collected boxes of books as their contribution to a community project in Nkyenenkyene, Ghana. This project was the result of the partnership established with the Malaria Foundation at the 1^st Hedge Funds vs Malaria Business Leadership Conference in December 2005. The MFI introduced Joy Borra to Dr. George Ayittey and facilitated the development of her project that resulted in the building of  "The Friendship Library" in the village of Nkyenenkyene, Ghana.  While controling malaria was important to this community, education needs and desire for a library were stressed by the community leaders to Joy Borra.  At the opening of the "Friendship Library", there was a major celebration and mosquito nets were distributed as the beginning of an effort to eliminate malaria in this area. The MFI hopes that other individuals like Joy are inspired and encouraged to addopt communities and help them eliminate the escourge of malaria. Individual or organizations are welcome to contact the MFI at malaria.org for assistance on establishing this partnerships, and bringing "Joy for Kids" all over the world.
