THE CONFERENCE
The “Hedge Funds vs. Malaria” Business Leadership Conference
brings together a distinguished group of business, medical, and political
leaders to present their insights on Africa, malaria worldwide, business,
marketing and investing. This highly renowned group has agreed to share
their insights to help support Malaria Foundation International (MFI) awareness
and outreach projects to help garner unprecedented support to fight this
disease (see www.malaria.org for press release and registration form). The
conference marks the first major malaria awareness and fundraising event
in the South Eastern United States. Fittingly, this will be held at Emory
University, which has current malaria research and outreach projects as
well as several historic notes relating to malaria. In the 1930s, because
malaria was a deadly public health problem sickening and killing Georgians,
philanthropist, Coca Cola Executive and friend of Emory University Mr. Robert
W. Woodruff helped establish the Malaria Field Station, the forerunner of
the Communicable Disease Center, which was built on land adjacent to Emory
University. This institution is currently well known as the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Malaria transmission is now rare in
the United States, but it remains one of the world’s largest killers
ever. The conference will act as a galvanizing/kickoff event to involve
more people in the fight against malaria. Between one million and three
million children die from malaria each year (more than AIDS and Cancer combined)
even though malaria, a disease transmitted by mosquitoes, is completely
preventable and can be treated. Current malaria control tools need to be
accessible and applied, as research continues to ensure the development
of malaria vaccines, drugs and improved methods to eliminate this devastating
disease.
